Delighted to inaugurate the exhibition “Nirāmayāta: Healing and Wellbeing in South Asian Texts and Practices” at @IIC_Delhi today.

In my remarks on the occasion, highlighted:

✅ That ‘Nirāmayāta’ is an exploration of a civilizational understanding of the relationship between individual, society & the natural world.

✅ The saṃhitās represent an important milestone in the systematization of traditional knowledge on health that can be studied, taught & transmitted across generations.

✅ The history of healing in the Subcontinent ranges from Vedic hymns & Buddhist monastic traditions to specialized texts on surgery, pharmacology & therapeutics.

✅ Medical knowledge in the Subcontinent travelled across linguistic, geographical & cultural boundaries, growing through experience, exchange and the accumulation of insights across societies.

✅ The breadth of questions examined on health went beyond curing an ailment, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of human wellbeing.

✅ Our traditional knowledge can provide valuable perspectives for contemporary inquiry, identifying these possibilities through credible research.

✅ There is need to recognize the contributions of people like vaidyas, surgeons, hakims, monks, and herbalists who preserved and passed the knowledge on to future generations.

✅ The task before us is to preserve these materials and to make them meaningful to contemporary audiences through digitization, use of AI, cataloguing, scholarly collaboration & public exhibitions.

✅ This endeavor is also part of a larger effort to recover and communicate our civilizational inheritance, in an era where economic and political rebalancing is being followed by a cultural one.

✅ In a world which is undergoing profound change, the preservation of manuscripts is an investment in our intellectual resources, since India’s progress requires technology and tradition to walk together: Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi.
