39 Arrested in Johannesburg as INTERPOL-Led Global Crackdown Uncovers West African Romance and Investment Scam Network and Seizes USD 2.67 Million

INTERPOL says an eight-month international operation targeting West African organised crime groups has resulted in 58 arrests and the identification of 263 suspects. Operation Jackal IV, which ran from November 2025 to June 2026, focused on disrupting money laundering, identifying high-value targets, seizing assets and supporting arrests and prosecutions.

In South Africa, authorities raided seven locations in Johannesburg linked to a syndicate running romance and investment scams against retirees in English-speaking countries. The operation resulted in the seizure of USD 2.67 million, the blocking of 257 bank accounts and the arrest of 39 people. INTERPOL also deployed an Operational Support Team to assist investigators.

The operation involved 22 countries across six continents, including Argentina, Nigeria, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. In Argentina, 196 people were identified in connection with a Crime-as-a-Service network, leading to 17 arrests. Romania also dismantled an investment scam operation linked to an estimated EUR 143 million stolen and laundered globally.

INTERPOL said Operation Jackal IV also identified emerging threats, including the use of sextortion against minors, with victims as young as 14, and the growing use of Crime-as-a-Service providers through the dark web. The operation enabled international intelligence sharing, financial investigations and cross-border coordination targeting the networks’ illicit activities.
