Sonam Wangchuk ends his fast after 26 days upon getting assurance from the government and members of parliament of all political parties that the issue of accountability in the failing examination system will be discussed on the floors of the Indian Parliament. The government also gave assurance that families of suicide victims in the recent NEET examination paper leak will be given adequate compensation and that there will be no cases registered against the peacefully protesting students and youths.

No single leadership, no single demand — a registered party and several student outfits. Some wanted a re-exam. Some the NTA scrapped. Some NEET abolished. A government cannot settle with a demand the protestors haven’t settled among themselves.

👉WHY NOT PARLIAMENT?
The Monsoon Session is sitting. A full NEET discussion was on offer — on record, under privilege, the minister obliged to answer. The LoP chose a dharna at the PM’s gate.

A debate produces a record. A dharna produces a photograph.

👉WHO STOLE THE PAPER?
You warned vested interests would hijack this protest. You were right. Yet four paragraphs go to the government — and not one to the men who stole the paper and sold a child’s years of work.

👉WHICH CONGRESS MINISTER WAS SACKED?
—AIEEE, 1 May 2011: leaked in UP, sold at Rs 6 lakh. 12 lakh students. Both sittings postponed.
—CBSE Accountancy 2006 · PMT 2008 · AIIMS 2012 — not one resignation.
—REET, 26 Sept 2021, Congress-run Rajasthan: leaked two days early. 16 lakh aspirants. Level-2 cancelled. The board chairman went. The minister stayed.

Silence then. Outrage now?

Investigate the leak. Prosecute the guilty. Rebuild exam security end to end. That serves students — a protest that preferred the gate to the table does not.
