As a Christian who has also struggled with balancing Pokemon, I have some thoughts.
First of all, as Christians, we are told to do all things in Christ. No, this does not mean praying to the Lord for a Dire Claw sleep. This means if you are pursuing the hobby, include him in it.
Including him in it can look like:
- Welcoming players to the community as a beacon of light
- Doing good to others by Christ’s standards
- Giving glory, avoiding self-pride from accomplishments
- Resisting temptation to bad-mouth, gossip, or talk down to other players
This is not to say Christians or anyone who claims to be is perfect.
The whole point of the faith is that we are all hypocrites. No one is up to God’s standard except Christ himself. Because he already did, we can. I have done some things and said some things I wish I had not. The point is not to be perfect but to do as Christ did.
Day by day, I am learning, Christ as my light, all I can do is follow.
So how does this tie to Pokemon?
As said earlier, we are told to do all things in Christ. Sometimes we may shut him out. This can look like playing Pokemon for self-glory, bragging rights, or just because it’s familiar.
It’s not that playing Pokemon is a sin. It’s the reason why. If you just like the game and don’t think much about it, great! It brings you joy. Enjoy the game.
For me, this joy was lost.
Let me share my personal story.
Back in 2022, I started VGC Corner. This brand started after a top-cut the world championships. This to me was my “I made it” moment. I decided to pursue coaching as a full-time venture. I kept balancing competition with coaching and it just was not working for me. I ended up doing both very mildly. My coaching numbers were alright and my tournament results were just decent.
I’d keep doing this cycle where I would get up enough money just to survive the month and go to a pokemon tournament. Legit felt like a drug-addict getting his fix.
So I prayed and the answer was simple “Stop playing in tournaments”. The problem is, just because I know what’s best in my life in the moment, doesn’t mean I’ll actually do it. This is the addicts mindset.
I kept trying to justify it. “If I do good at this tournament, I can market it for the brand and get more clients!” I’d tell myself. The problem is that my passion was slowly dying for competition. I just lost the light within the game. God knew this. I didn’t listen.
I realized my pursuit of competition just was not healthy for my soul. I wanted to be better than everyone else and I wanted to prove it. Not to say competition is unhealthy for everyone but for me in that moment, it was not what I needed. It stopped serving me and I started serving it. The idea became my idol.
This cycle of tournament after tournament continued for year after year, never doing terrible, just “okay” at every tournament.
For someone who’s dedicated his whole life to the game, this is a terrible feeling.
My latest revelation happened right after worlds 2025. That was the tournament where I did my worst.
For the first time, I didn’t feel upset I did bad. I just felt numb, and tired.
This to me was my breaking point. I realized the way I approached competition) no longer was beneficial to me.
So I told myself I’d stop competing and focus on growing the business. This went good, The Lord provided me with an amazing group of clients to serve. When I stopped seeing my results first and, and started truly caring about their goals, their results soared.
Now that I have some breathing room, I was able to focus on if I really wanted to compete. Honestly, I don’t know. I’ll give it another shot.
I’m doing Milwaukee.
I’m gonna give myself a fair shot and prep my best.
If the joy isn’t there, I might not be competing for a while. This is to focus on more sustainability in life and my clients.
From now on. I will be trying to enjoy the game and teach others how to do the same and get better.
