John Stewart has always been the politician of the Corps. He smiles, he measures every word, he plays the long game, and the second someone like Hal starts lowering his guard, John tests how far he can push it. That “It must be Macon, like Hector said” wasn’t a slip. It was a calculated lie delivered to a man who has already been betrayed by Sinestro, the Guardians, and half the people he’s ever trusted. Hal’s “yeah…” isn’t just disappointment. It’s the exact moment he realises John is already positioning himself as the better lantern.

Hal doesn’t crash the car because he’s a prick. He crashes it because he’s finally treating John’s ambition as a real threat instead of pretending they’re partners. The people clutching pearls over this scene are the same ones who want Hal to stay the charming, golden-boy flyboy forever. This version of Hal is colder, more damaged, and far more interesting.
