I met with a group of teenagers yesterday. One of their teachers had suggested that I talk to them about career paths because they're all anxious about exams, university choices and future work.
Instead of talking to them, I listened, and the actual problem was very different.
If an opportunity like this comes your way fellow nurses and AHPs - go for it! Doing something like this instills hope which is such a key part of working in healthcare.
I do feel really lucky. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the Eden Project and @HotHouseEden leadership facilitators and the past two days, training on QI and leadership. Looking forward to working on my QI project in @SolentNHSTrust to improve sustainability in my team.
I have just started the Green Healthcare Leadership Programme with @FNightingaleF It has been so lovely to meet a variety of people in healthcare passionate about change and improvement in the NHS, when everything feels (and is) so grim working inside of it, at times.
For those who don't fully understand what is up with the NHS, here is a thread for you that might help.
I'm a consultant physician working as a doctor in the NHS in Yorkshire and Wales for 32 years now. I have experienced the NHS at its best (2008) and its worst (2022).
Interesting…
Specialist roles would be great in HV, especially with a population that has evolving complex needs requiring skill and expertise to navigate. Post covid impacts exacerbating many things like speech and language, emotional and mental health etc.
iHV publishes Career Pathway for Health Visiting. Designed as a resource for workforce planning, it includes different job roles contributing to #HealthVisiting provision and maps these against levels of practice.

@KathEvans2 @vealiegood @alimully Wouldn’t it still be 18 months course minimum? Requiring the student to quit their current role? A lot of nurses looking at gaining a second registration would still need an income due to cost of living, caring responsibilities, etc. to do SCPHN you are paid band 5 for the year.
@KWebbNurse @hepworth_becky@CalmHolmes I think there are so many ways to tap into the potential of our current workforce to improve retention, change workplace cultures and role model to future HCPs. Diversity of skills are integral to the NHS!
Would love to see better routes for registered nurses to transfer to different parts of the register I.e mental health to adult nursing etc. Currently, a 2 year course is the minimum. Not doable when you have to give up your salary to do so. Could help retention of staff?
@CalmHolmes@hepworth_becky I think that’s still the case for midwifery although they are few and far between now I believe? I think the issue for many nurses is having to go back to uni and quit their jobs which is not feasible given the funding for nurse training as it is currently.
🤩 Due to Service development, we have lots of exciting new opportunities waiting to be filled by you.... Band 4,5,6 & 7 in our fabulous integrated service.
Look forward to hearing from you soon ☺
B7 COAST (iCCNS)
B7 Training lead
B6, B5 full/part time

@hepworth_becky@CalmHolmes I think this would be great. To be able to offer training in post to gain a second registration. There are apprenticeship RPL routes for nursing associates but not for registered nurses.
If the NHS recruited every school leaver for 5 years it still wouldn’t be able to fill its vacancy rate.
Wow @devlinPJ talking about importance of kindness in teams and organisation #LfE5 NHS kindness network
@alisonleary1@mancunianmedic Nursing grades are always lower. We are safety critical staff there 24 hours a day. For some reason our skills and expertise are not recognised and often the only option is to go into management or education, depleting clinical skills/experience.
@alisonleary1 I have noticed this. Clinical nurse specialist roles which were B7 are now B6 with some being developmental posts B5-6. It would be good to have a clear progression for nurses, a bit like midwives, to progress to B6.
My generation and the one before took our eye off the ball - we were so grateful not to be working 120 hours per week that we failed to preserve the terms and conditions needed to have a good working life in what is a difficult, but immensely satisfying job.
So I’ve thought long and hard about this:
When the ballot went out I voted to strike. I’ve been in two minds whether to go through with it, particularly with the disruption it will cause, but I’ve decided to go through with it.
