Herzog has been creating images with code since the mid-2000s. To truly experience his work, you have connect a digital device to the web. One could thus argue that the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee is the single most important technological precursor to his artist practice:

"One of the key moments in mass-media art but also in human history, Berners-Lee’s invention revolutionized the digital landscape as the visionary computer scientist conceived of the concept of the World Wide Web (WWW). The invention was also critical to the eventual development of NFTs.

Working at CERN, he proposed a decentralized system to share and retrieve information, laying the foundation for the Internet we know today. By 1991, he had created the first web page, ushering in a new era of global communication. Berners-Lee's invention broke down technological barriers, democratizing access to information.

The rise of mass-media technology and art were critical steps in enabling NFTs. Thus, this can be seen as a critical step in the development of digital art, such as net art. Related: A lot of people seem to be under the impression that you can only evolve your own locked mints...

This is absolutely not true. You don't need to start at 1 and mint 100 if you are really only looking for deeper generations.

You can evolve ANY locked mint(!)

So, any Inner Forms that has been evolved or locked by anyone, can be evolved by you.

(@fx_hash_ provides a nice "locked" filter on their lineage map to make finding these easier, and I will be adding something similar to the custom explorer on my site soon!)
