Rocio likes to walk with her father a half mile down the hill from their home to a greenhouse rose farm. He lets her pick early-blooming buds while he stakes, straightens, weeds and waters the flowers that are destined for countries where he can’t go. Such as the United States.

The Highlands of Guatemala are the backdrop of the Guatemalan half of the story of Border of Dreams. Mardequo’s family loves their home and community, but he felt compelled to leave his home rose gardens, volcanoes and everything else he knew to provide for his wife and children.
