Confer Highest civilian Award Bharat Ratna to the late Prime Minister VP Singh.
***************************************
I participated in and spoke at the 3rd National Convention on V.P. Singh, held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, to celebrate the 94th birthday anniversary of the late Prime Minister V.P. Singh. During the event, I reflected on his significant contribution to implementing 27% reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Notably, he served as Prime Minister of India for only 343 days, and his push for this decision ultimately cost him his National Front government.
In contrast, the Modi government has been in power for over 11 years and is interested only in providing 10% reservations for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) but has not taken any steps to increase the reservation for OBCs from 27%.
Following strong voices from across the country, including from our DMK leader Hon. @mkstalin, the Union Government has now announced a caste census. However, the Union responsibility does not end here. I urged the Union Government to provide:
- Clarity on the timeline,
- Transparency in the methodology,
- Inclusivity in the framework regarding the caste census.
If the Bharat Ratna is to mean more than mere ceremonial symbolism, then no one is more deserving of it than V.P. Singh—the man who took the Constitution seriously when it mattered most.
In the spirit of Thiru V.P. Singh, I requested the participants to pledge to:
- Fight for the caste census until truth replaces speculation,
- Break the 50% ceiling until representation is fair,
- Implement the Mandal Commission recommendations in full, not in fragments,
- Advocate for reservations in both public and private sectors,
- Ensure that OBC women are not left behind in the name of progress,
- Institutionalize the vision of justice that V.P. Singh championed, and
- Commit to honoring this torchbearer of India's social awakening with the highest civilian Bharat Ratna award.
I stated, “Let this convention be more than a commemoration; let it be a clarion call. V.P. Singh lit the lamp, and it is now our duty to carry it forward.”
