I love this piece of history, and I bet it’s not taught in schools.
In the 1860s, white working class cotton workers in Lancashire refused to support the Confederacy, which was fighting to keep slavery going, and instead supported the abolition of slavery, even though it meant losing their livelihood and starving.
Despite suffering from immense hunger, lack of heating, and evictions, Lancashire workers held meetings, such as the one in Manchester on December 31, 1862, to pass resolutions in support of Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery. They deemed the suffering "fairly compensated" if slavery was destroyed.
It’s stories like this which prove racism and slavery was not white vs black… so many white people fought for our ancestors freedom even at their own detriment. Both of our white and black ancestors often fought on the same side
Thank you to those working class white people of Lancashire.
