@everytstudies kind of surprised it has (apparently) divided along political lines as I think it doesn't really align with either left or right, or at least the case could be made either way. As someone who leans left I certainly hope that most liberals will not defend the state killing pets
@mattyglesias honestly it's getting close to china twitter, pro-CCP people complain that critical China watchers are victims of group think and that objecting voices are 'suppressed' while saying nothing of the fact that people who object to the CCP in China are literally put in jail
@krishnanrohit Honestly find it difficult to hope that the guy who shamelessly tried to whip up racist hate against Haitian immigrants and fully backed Trump with his eyes wide open remains a key figure in US politics, you’ve got plenty of smart people who are far less morally repugnant
@KaiserKuo There’s also the question of how culture is defined, globally Chinese cuisine is still expanding… does tik-tok count? Is musk saying he wanted to create an “everything app” like WeChat cultural influence? Half the videos that pop up on my Twitter nowadays seem to be from China
@KaiserKuo …terms of stuff that had some breakthrough in the west like films from Chen Kaige, Zhang yimou or works by mo yan, yu hua… although I suppose the three-body problem has equalled or surpassed those in terms of impact by now
@KaiserKuo Perhaps it’s just nostalgia, but many Chinese friends seem of the view that cultural products were better quality from 80s to early 2000s, i guess a lot of that is from Hong Kong which doesn’t really undermine ur point, but some mainland examples too perhaps, especially in…
@CarlosCMTF@StefanFSchubert He's playing a character, people he interacts with r not. you seem to assume this is some cudgel to beat Americans with, but he did this originally in the UK and exposed similar prejudices; it's simply true that his interlocutors expressed prejudice in response to his characters
@CarlosCMTF@StefanFSchubert For me being civil to a guest doesn’t mean playing along with their racism/anti-semitism. It doesn’t seem like you’ve actually watched it, but you already formed your opinion so we might as well leave it here
@DreyerChina What’s the context of the headband that makes it culturally insensitive? Is it what was written on it or does it have military connotations?
