🏆Barbora Smolkova, PhD, is a doctoral researcher at the Department of Paediatric Research at Oslo University Hospital, where she focuses on the cellular mechanisms of genetic liver diseases. Her work, which combines stem cell technologies and liver organoid models, recently earned her the prestigious Daniel Alagille Award 2025 at #EASLCongress. In this interview, Barbora shares insights into her academic background, the inspiration behind her work in hepatology, and her ongoing efforts to better understand and ultimately treat rare cholestatic disorders like Aagenaes syndrome.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jessica Zucman-Rossi, University of Paris Cité, France, for her EASL Recognition Award 2025, presented at #EASLCongress. 👏
"Jessica is committed to helping and guiding people, in particular, actively supporting the career development of women scientists," said Sophie Lotersztajn in her introduction.
"What I love most in research is the joy of collective discovery. Sometimes, something clicks, and this is a piece of the puzzle that falls into place that makes our understanding grow. When you begin to experience this, you are completely addicted to research. This type of discovery would not be possible without my team.
It is our responsibility, to raise the voice of science. Fundamental, translational, and clinical science, that improves care and prevention and is inclusive for all individuals, in all of their diversity. We must all applaud the freedom for science." - said @Zucmanrossi in her acceptance speech.

🏆Today, we are thrilled to announce the recognition of five outstanding individuals whose dedication and contributions to liver research and patient care have been exemplary.
The Emerging Leader Award, designed to spotlight young fellows in the field, has been given to Mattias Mandorfer from Vienna, Austria, and Silvia Affo` from Barcelona, Spain, in honor of their remarkable international liver research achievements.
The Rising Star Award celebrates the commitment of emerging liver nurses and Allied Health Professionals to improving the well-being of individuals with liver disease, with this year's recipient being Sally Tilden, from Bristol, UK, and Thomas Maurel, from Paris, France.
The Daniel Alagille Award, recognising promising young scientists in the exploration of paediatric or adult genetic cholestatic diseases, has been given to Barbora Smolkova from Oslo, Norway.

Yesterday I received my Ph.D. title. It was a great journey full of inspiring people and motivational discussions. Big thanks to my supervisor @OlegLunov for teaching me how to spot and call bullsh*t not only in science.🧫 @FZU_AVCR @PhDVoice
We are struggling with this paper. Editors do not want to deal with contradictory results. I hope finally the scientific rigor and truth will come to the light…
