@NancySinatra Flashback: walked past a newsstand in London on the way to grab lunch. Evening Standard's headline: Sinatra dead. 28 years ago. Still remember this very moment clearly incl the newsstand and how the papers were displayed.
@ClimateWarrior7 In Germany, any pub landlord can declare his pub to be a smoker's pub, bar entry of under 18s and, viola, you have a smoker's pub. I know two in my city.
@PaintingsLondon Three memories: in 1992, Olympia and York (owner and developer of CW) went bankrupt. In 1997 I started to work in the tower (27th floor) and (because it's in 2 days) The Long Good Friday with the great Bob Hoskins (and his rant at the Savoy)
not to forget Green Park and Regent's Park, both also in central London. And some of the squares, at least during daylight, are also open to the public like St. James's Sq, and Grosvenor Sq. Agree with the sentiment though - a world class city requires at least one large park close to the center. A strange case is Hamburg where they have a very large lake with a sliver of a park on the western side in the city.
@johndory1914@eugyppius1 I prefer the rougher climate of the east Frisian barrier islands. Baltic can be nice, too though. Spent some pleasant summer days at Travemünde many years ago.
@afneil A few years back Springer thought they had the FT in the bag until Nikkei swooped in at the eleventh hour and snatched it away. They have always coveted a major English language newspaper.
