After dinner I watched #Odyssey. It’s a shitty movie with (very very) few good things.

The brilliant: the music - entirely played in instruments available in the Bronze Age

The good: 3 special effects bits lasting a few minutes each - that were newly conceived and rendered different from previous movies
1) where Cersei turns the ithacans to pigs
2) where Ulysses meets tiresas in Hades
3) the to-fro narration mostly matching the sequence of Homer’s original

The terrible:
• the architecture, the clothes, the ships all crap - either fictional or from a later period. Agamemnon is literally 21st century Batman meets Darth Vader. The giants are in almost the exact armour of The Mountain in Game of Thrones. Literally every scene has something so terribly out of place in the Bronze Age that you can’t focus on the story
• given the ships are so important you’d have thought he’d at least get that design right? Nope - it’s a fucking Viking longboat hull shape from at least 2000 years later. Glaringly you can see several pulleys aboard the ships - which Bronze Age vessels didn’t use at all and appeared 1000 years later. The ship feels Viking, the rigging feels medieval.
• the acting is terrible. Across the board. Even Anne Hathaway. The only half way redemption is pattinson playing Antinuous
• Watch THE RETURN a 2024 movie starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche - not perfect but an infinitely superior movie in terms of acting and fidelity to the Bronze Age in terms of clothes, architecture, ships etc etc
• Nolan forcibly trying to shoehorn the SEA PEOPLE and the end of the Bronze Age narrative into his movie is both a historical - fake historical and thus super irritating.

Don’t waste your money. Wait for it to come on Netflix. If any reviewer tells you it’s good they’re one, many or all of the below options
1) corrupt and got paid to praise it
2) haven’t seen the several dozen other adaptations of the Homeric world
3) have zero knowledge of Bronze Age history
4) have never read the Iliad or the odyssey

I can totally see why talentless shill Anupama Chopra loved it - it’s almost as shitty as the shitty movies her talentless washout of a husband makes.

Here’s the story of Ranjish. 💔
