Had an echocardiogram this morning. I was masked, as was the echo tech. She had the sniffles/ was clearing her throat throat.
Several points:
1) She ideally should’ve stayed home from work - but in the real world, that’s not always a choice for people. This further underscores the need for masking in healthcare settings when respiratory diseases are circulating.
2) I was all the more appreciative for the double masking in close quarters. It isn’t just about the vulnerable protecting themselves. It takes two to make a thing go right.
3) Did she have Covid? It actually doesn’t matter. Regardless it was likely some sort of virus that I especially don’t want to get before Christmas. And remember – I was there for an echocardiogram. The consequences of an infection transmitted in a healthcare setting are MUCH higher.
4) This isn’t just about protecting me. I could’ve been asymptomatic and transmitted something to her and/ or the other patients she was caring for today.
Moral of the story? Whether you believe in “mandates” or not masking up in healthcare facilities when respiratory viruses are circulating is just plain good sense and good care. 😷👍🏽
Did you know that these top 4 inflammation test markers are NOT always on normal labs? 🙅♀️

@amazon why not donate funds to community clinics instead of creating a system that will decrease preventative care and put doctors out of business. #amazonhealthcare#weareTMA
@masikakalysha A lot of women feel that way but dont say it. No shame in feeling that way. And it’s not just the single moms. There are wives out here not getting anything also 🙏🏾
Yo moms are really under appreciated. Happy Mother’s Day to all the queens who didn’t get any recognition or appreciation today. You make the world go round
Update.
Spoke with Medical Director @MakeAWish and they are game to discuss how to fix this.
I will join a call with Advisory Council later this week.
Props to @MakeAWish for reaching out and for quick action.
Keep the Likes/RTs going to show how serious we are!
Well that blew up and may lead to change
Let’s try again.
There are more children who die per day from #SickleCellDisease than #HIV but no funding or recognition that SCD is a global health problem.
What say you @BillGates@gatesfoundation@WHO ?
A child with #SickleCellDisease is not eligible for @MakeAWish unless certain criteria are met
For #cysticfibrosis a diagnosis alone is sufficient
Both are life-threatening w/ significant impact on quality of life
The difference is race(ism)
@MakeAWish How do we change this?
A child with sickle cell disease is born across the world EVERY TWO MINUTES. Most die without a diagnosis in the first years of life. Sickle cell belongs among HIV, TB, Malaria as critical global health problems. #SickleCellAwarenessMonth
