The Battle of Mutale River was a skirmish on March 28, 1988, in what was then the Northern Transvaal (now Limpopo), South Africa, between a nine-person Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) unit and the Venda Defence Force (VDF). The MK unit, which had crossed from Zimbabwe, was engaged by the VDF, which was reinforced by the South African Defence Force (SADF) and helicopter gunships. The battle resulted in the deaths of five of the nine MK soldiers. Source: Madeleine Fullard, Department of Military Veterans.
