Sourfest 2019 Masterclass Brewers Spotlight 2 - "Got Brett?" with Jason Bathgate from @mcleodsbrewerynz. Saturday Dec 7th @ 2pm. Jason will be pouring from their Smuggler's Bay series the Black Rye Sour, Farmhouse sour, Bonnie brett ale & a new beer which hasn't been disclosed.
Head Brewer Jason Bathgate creates a wide range of styles. Their renowned Smugglers Bay series is their playground for small batch Belgian inspired ales, as well as barrel aged beers & delectable sours. A key organism that makes many of these beers special is Brettanomyces.
I've had the privilege a few times to hear Jason talk beers in length & it's been some of the most insightful discussions I've heard into the beer community in NZ. I even got to ask him about cyanide in beers one time, to which he had very interesting answers (think cherry pits).
In 2016 he won best beer and best brewer in the SOBA National Homebrew Competition, and has since produced some of the most creative beers in a 50L nano brewery. Jamie will be showcasing 4 beers to discuss his farmhouse, sour, wild, funky and fruited beers.

Brewer Jamie McQuillan of Cell Division of Dunedin will be the shop’s 4th masterclass of the weekend. He brings to life mixed & alternative ferments, takes on incredible fruiting additions, and looks beyond Belgium in terms of farmhouse styles.
