20 years of learning. A lifetime of possibilities.

Young people’s mental health starts with the adults around them. Together with the Harry Kane Foundation, we’ve reached 100,000+ young people. #WorldMentalHealthDay

For 20 years, we’ve been learning what it really takes to help young people develop the skills to navigate life — not just when things get difficult, but before they do.

But the ambition has only become bigger.

Here’s to the next chapter. 🧡

We still sometimes talk about young people’s “online lives” as though they’re separate from real life. Media literacy is increasingly life literacy.

That’s why media influence is part of the psychological fitness learning within Healthy Minds.

Psychological fitness doesn’t promise a life without anxiety.

It develops greater understanding, choice and agency when anxiety appears.

Resilience has become confused with positivity. Real psychological fitness isn’t about pretending difficult things aren’t difficult.

Strength isn’t the absence of difficult emotions. It’s knowing how to navigate them. Regulate. Recover. Adapt.

Young people don’t develop psychological fitness in isolation. The adults around them form part of their lived curriculum. What happens around a young person shapes what becomes possible within them.

We’ve become much better at talking about young people’s mental health. But are we still waiting too long to give them the skills they need?

The ambition should be preparing them for life in the first place.

Mental health isn't only about identifying when somebody isn't okay.

It's also about developing the capabilities, relationships and self-understanding that help us navigate everyday life.

That's psychological fitness.

This year marks 20 years of Bounce Forward's work and 10 years as an independent charity.

We're proud of the last 20 years.

But we're much more interested in what we can do with the next 20.

By the end of primary school, thinking and emotional patterns are already forming.

Our Teach Mental Resilience (KS2) programme helps pupils respond to setbacks, reframe negative thinking, build empathy and develop optimism.

Whole staff training gives every adult a shared language for psychological fitness. When staff model and use the same tools, resilience becomes part of school culture.

Our Teach Mental Resilience (KS2) programme equips primary teachers with structured lessons that embed optimism, empathy and flexible thinking early.

Early investment creates long-term strength.

Psychological fitness helps young people replace “I can’t do this” with recovery language: “What’s in my control?” “What can I try next?” Language shapes behaviour.

@andyburnham Strongly support this. The less we medicalise everyday struggle, the more opportunity we create to build psychological fitness. Being supported to regulate, recover and adapt strengthens the pathways we can draw on next time—without minimising the need for clinical care.
