On 22 June 1922, one of the most politicized football clubs in the world was founded. On that day, Velež Mostar, now a club in the top division of Bosnian football, was born.

In 1920, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia was founded and quickly gained significant influence within the working class. This influence spread to working class institutions, one of which was SK Radnički Omladina. However, the authorities of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, as part of their repression of the communist movement, banned the club's activities and dissolved it.

In response, Anđelko Vlaho and Ranko Slijepčević brought together the club's former directors and part of its squad. Their goal was to establish a new club that was more radical, rooted in the working class, and Marxist.

They settled in Mostar, and on 22 June 1922, Radnički Šport Klub Velež was officially founded. In 1923, the club officially came under the leadership of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia through Savo Neimarović.

They had no intention of keeping a low profile. Their goal was to defy the bans. The colour red, stars, portraits of Karl Marx, and passionate chants became the club's trademarks. This made them extremely popular among workers while turning them into a target for the authorities.

Things became even more difficult in 1929. King Alexander I abolished the constitution and launched a campaign of persecution against the club's leaders and supporters. This marked the beginning of a dark period for the club.

The club did not begin to recover until the 1960s. That revival culminated in two Yugoslav Cups in the 1980s. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the club changed its name to Velež Mostar and became champions of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006.

To this day, Velež Mostar remains faithful to the spirit of its founders. Its supporters' group, known as the Red Army, continues to display communist and socialist symbols in the stands while supporting popular movements and social protests.

In a powerful speech in the Macedonian Parliament, MP Amar Mečinovik (Left party) exposed the devastating housing crisis destroying the country:
