One lesson life has taught me is that family relationships matter more than many of us realize.
To every young woman, if you have the opportunity, build a healthy relationship with your father. Listen to him, talk with him, learn from him, and value his presence in your life.
A loving, engaged father can provide wisdom, security, perspective, and an example of how healthy relationships should work. Those lessons can be valuable later in marriage and in life.
The same goes for young men. Respect your father and your mother, learn from both, and observe how healthy families communicate, resolve conflict, and show respect.
No family is perfect, and a person’s upbringing does not determine their future. Every adult is responsible for their own choices.
But before marriage, don’t only ask, “Do I love this person?”
Also ask:
How do they relate to their parents?
How do they handle conflict?
Do they show respect?
Are they willing to learn, forgive, and grow?
Love is important, but character, humility, and teachability are what sustain a marriage when life becomes difficult.
These are lessons I learned through experience, and I hope they help someone make wiser decisions than I did.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through my own marriage is this:
Before you marry someone, don’t just fall in love with the person understand the environment that shaped them.
Get to know their family.
Observe how conflict is handled.
See how husbands and wives treat each other.
Listen to how they talk about marriage, forgiveness, commitment, money, and respect.
Your future spouse is not defined by their family, but their upbringing can influence how they view relationships.
At the same time, don’t assume someone’s family history determines their future. Every adult is responsible for the choices they make.
Most importantly, ask the hard questions before marriage not after the wedding.
I share this not to judge anyone, but because experience has taught me that wisdom before marriage can prevent heartache later.
When someone is rude, when they’re offensive, don’t take it personally. None of that will stop your destiny unless you get distracted and start fighting battles that don’t matter. Let God be your vindicator.
