During the final season of Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck made a very specific demand to CBS.

It had nothing to do with his iconic mustache, his red Ferrari, or superstar treatment.

He wanted his crew to receive $1,000 bonus checks.

The show had actually finished under budget, thanks to the grueling, behind-the-scenes discipline of the crew. But CBS flat-out refused to pay the bonuses.
So, Selleck found a loophole.

He negotiated a larger final payout for himself and then quietly redirected that money straight to the electricians, drivers, makeup artists, and camera operators.

He could have pocketed the extra cash and smiled for the cameras. Instead, he made sure the people carrying the show were seen where it mattered most: their paychecks.

That quiet generosity has been a theme his entire life.

Years later in November 2020, Selleck dined at Elio's in NYC. On a $204 bill, he left a massive $2,020 tip.

His handwritten note simply read: "Honoring my friend Donnie Wahlberg's 'tip challenge' with my sincere hope for a better 2020."

The best part? He never even bragged about it to Donnie (his Blue Bloods co-star). The restaurant staff were the ones who shared the story.
