if that plot contradicts past canon: the past is past, and whatever you think you read is not true. 
If that plot's implications threaten her worldbuilding: magic sometimes is wild and cannot be explained.

And right now, she needs Ty's actions to be something horrible that's never been done before

I know this is just a narrative choice, but it will forever bother me the way cc only gave certain herondale traits to the characters who keep the herondale surname. like isabelle, alec and probably the blackthorns have the same amount of herondale blood tham jace and kit
