The Sokoto Declaration: A Disguised Insurrection

An attempt at insurrection of the government of Biafra has been foiled.

Purportedly released on 30 May 2026 from the confines of a Nigerian prison, the document titled “The Sokoto Declaration: Apparently,A Call to Rise Up and Free the Land Known as Nigeria” presents itself as a joint manifesto of self-determination. Jointly attributed to detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and one American activist Mike Arnold, and reported to be publicly authenticated by Kanu’s special counsel Aloy Ejimakor, the text has instead become the focal point of a fraudulent attempt at insurrection against the government of Biafra for intent, and political purpose.

The declaration lists Kanu as “Co-Signatory · Prisoner of Conscience, Sokoto” and Arnold as co-issuer. Ejimakor stated before its release that Kanu had authorized disclosure of their collaboration and joint drafting. Contemporary reporting described the text as having been conveyed from the Sokoto Custodial Centre, where Kanu is serving a life sentence.

Its substance purportedly extends well beyond a narrow Biafran claim. The declaration accuses Nigerian authorities of long-term conquest and ethnic cleansing presented as farmer-herder conflict, labels the current administration an “evil regime,” and calls on multiple groups—Biafra, Yoruba, Middle Belt, and northern minorities—to rise against existing structures. It asserts that self-determination is not a crime and that a free vote is not violence. The release date coincided with the anniversary of the 1967 Biafra declaration, a timing noted by outlets that covered the initial announcement.

Biafran Government reject this account. A 3rd of October 2026 notice from the United States of Biafra office of the deputy prime minister describes associated materials as unauthorized and aimed at undermining an outright Biafra exit.

These government states that Kanu remains in solitary confinement and cannot personally verify or endorse documents circulated through counsel or social media; they treat only materials confirmed through the government’s own channels as authentic.

They further argue that the declaration’s emphasis on freeing “the land known as Nigeria” and its multi-group framing dilutes separation demands and aligns with broader restructuring agendas.

Parallel criticism from constitutional-reconstruction advocates has characterized the text as a shift away from earlier restoration positions toward a wider Nigerian political project.

The central evidentiary problem remains. A listed co-signatory designation, counsel’s advance announcement, and an IPOB affirmation may create a public paper trail. They do not, however, supply independent confirmation that a person held under restricted prison access personally reviewed and endorsed every element of the final wording.

Assertions of non-approval from Biafra Government rest on claimed direct information.

Biafra Government therefore describe the declaration as a disguised insurrection: a call to dismantle governing structures, issued under the name of an imprisoned leader whose direct participation cannot be independently established, and framed in language that invites coordinated opposition across ethnic lines.
