A mask can build a legend, but it can also leave us wondering whose name belongs on the flowers.
For years, South Africans have asked the same question:
Who is the real Mzekezeke?
Whenever the name comes up, DJ Sbu is never far behind. The public has long believed that Mzekezeke is his alter ego, yet DJ Sbu and Mzekezeke have repeatedly maintained that they are two different people, even appearing together in an interview that only made the mystery more entertaining.
Maybe keeping the secret alive was brilliant marketing. The balaclava gave Mzekezeke a life beyond an ordinary artist and turned him into one of the most unforgettable characters in South African music.
But here is my question:
When the time comes to formally honour the person who gave us those songs, whose name will South Africa call?
Who receives the flowers?
Who stands beside that legacy and says, “This was my work”?
We can celebrate the music now. We can play Guqangama Dolo, remember the attitude, the humour and the energy that made Mzekezeke impossible to ignore.
But after all these years, perhaps the country deserves to hear the truth directly from the person behind the mask.
The joke has lasted.
The legend is secure.
Mzekezeke, my brother, it may finally be time to come clean.
