FACT CHECK THIS:

In June 2020, Lidia Thorpe was preselected to fill the Federal Senate vacancy caused by former leader Richard Di Natale’s resignation. She was appointed at a joint sitting of the Victorian Parliament on the 4th September and sworn in on the 6th October 2020.

She is purported to be the first Aboriginal woman to represent Victoria in the Senate. But her family history casts doubt on such a claim. Thorpe also claims to be a “Gunditjmara woman” but was born in Collingwood and has never lived in Gunditjmara country, nor her mother Marjorie, who was born and raised in Yallourn, or her Grandmother Alma, who was born in Fitzroy. Gunditjmara were traditionally river and lake people, within Lake Condah, and around the Warrnambool area. It is also odd that these “Gunditjmara women” down through the generations maintained the surname “Thorpe,” an ancient name of Anglo-Saxon and Old Scandinavian origin.

What do the records show in relation to Lidia Thorpe’s family history and “Aboriginality”? Firstly, five generations of Thorpe women married out (interbred) with white men. Starting with Lidya Thorpe’s great, great, great grandmother, whose name, as far as I can determine, is not known, only that she gave birth to Edna Thorpe, Lidya’s great, great, great grandmother, who was also like most mixed-race children at that time sent from all over Victoria to Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve. Here, legislation soon required that such children leave the reserve and be assimilated into the broader Australian community.

If one were to assess the amount of Aboriginality Lidia has inherited it would be my layman’s guess of around 3%. The fact that she has never lived in Gunditjmara country seems to cast doubt on her claim to be a Gunditjmara woman, nor did her mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother. The only tie to the Gunditjmara clan seems to be Lydia’s great, great, great-grandmother, for which there is no proof. She may have come from any number of clans and was herself, I would remind the reader, only half Aboriginal.

I find Lydia Thorpe’s claims about her Aboriginality to be disingenuous, ambiguous, and dishonest. Her attitude towards Australians and Australia generally is racist, hypocritical, and regressive. In a recent interview, for example, she told Miriam Margolyes that she “didn’t identify as being Australian,” and that “the Crown had committed mass genocide against the Aboriginal People.” She also wants Australians to pay reparations to Aboriginal people, the majority of whose ancestors came from all ethnic backgrounds to Australia generations after the First Fleet landed. She said recently that such people were “enjoying the benefits of colonialism.” But they are not pretending to be what they are not. All new migrants take an oath to Australia and its Constitution, both of which Lydia does not even recognise!

Parliamentarians have to swear an oath to the Crown as a precondition of their assuming office, and part of it goes like this: “To be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors according to law.” Lydia of course pledged her allegiance to the very people whose ancestors supposedly committed mass genocide against Aboriginals. A rather odd position for someone to take who doesn’t even recognise Australia or its Constitution as legitimate! You couldn’t make this stuff up. But what prompted her to bend the knee? It wouldn’t be the federal MP’s base salary of $211,250 a year plus?
But hey, why shouldn’t 97% of Lydia enjoy the benefits of colonialism!
