Think it’s more likely MLS expands to 36* teams and creates two tiers of 18*, vs joining an open pyramid with USL and others.

Keeps it at 34 games per season. Playing home and away, just like other top leagues.

It’d be a more sustainable business model for them, and would still bring meaning to the regular season games.

They are already at 30 teams and expansion talks aren’t going away.

I know this isn’t what any Pro/Rel truther wants, but I think it’s possible.

@scuffedpod 100p … Poch is a good hire if you want to raise the ceiling for our 1st team for a short window (he mostly delivered there) but hasn’t shown he can help with a longterm strategy to raise the floor. leash should be short if we struggle regionally

@topeoyerinde feel ya ... but in a 64 team format, it might make sense to schedule a few of each days' kickoffs simultaneously for group play. would solve some of that interest issue (it's ok to not watch every match) and keep days off between games for teams reasonable even with 16 groups

ngl ... kinda don't wanna throw the baby out with the bathwater here on a 64-team World Cup, which actually makes more sense than 48. fixes the "top 8 3rd place teams" mess, restoring group stage importance while adding no games to individual team schedules. but lets cut it there

@kylesheldon Fair. But I think there's a potential 3rd problem which grows as the league does... home-hosted single elimination is a dubious way to name a champion compared to global leagues. esp because 30 teams means "strength of schedule" is a real factor here and almost nowhere else

ASG is good for the league because it’s in a pre-planned location, so it’s on paper a better asset for corporate activation than MLS Cup. can “fix” ASG by making Cup matter enough to work in a rotated neutral site (like SB or UCL final) and no longer need ASG at all

@kylesheldon cup finals i've attended are always exciting, but for me it's solving a real problem (not enough interest to stand up a neutral site) and a chosen one (regular season doesn't matter enough). getting past those in MLS 4.0 would be evidence of massive growth. hope it *can* change !

@rieszspieces @TheStalwart @souljagoyteller the difference is that american sports are engineered to keep teams from being good for very long to create the illusion of parity - our big four leagues are built on the dream that on a long enough timeline everybody gets a turn as champs. it benefits the owners in the end
