In 1888, Welsh engineer and astrophotography pioneer Isaac Roberts captured the first known image of the Andromeda Galaxy using a 20-inch reflector telescope with long-exposure techniques, unveiling its stunning spiral structure. At the time, scientists mistook Andromeda for a nebula within the Milky Way, but Roberts’ groundbreaking photo suggested a vaster entity. Decades later, Edwin Hubble confirmed it as a separate galaxy, revolutionizing our cosmic perspective. This milestone showcased photography’s ability to unlock the universe’s secrets, cementing Roberts’ legacy in astronomy.

Sincerely & gratefully yours,
A confused European (plus the rest of the world, probably)
