First story of 2025 on the front page of today's @japantimes!
Great start to a second year of freelance journalism! Grateful for the editors who have honed my coverage of the far reaching impact of Japanese business, tech and foreign policy in Southeast Asia.

Just in case it’s been missed by those incandescent with rage at the mere mention that journalists doing their jobs shouldn’t be bombed, tortured, jailed or intimidated, a little reminder of int law.
Globally, 320 journalists were imprisoned as of 12/1/23, the second highest recorded since CPJ started collecting data in 1992.
The previous record was set in 2022.
Top jailers of journalists: China, Myanmar, Belarus, Russia, Vietnam, Israel, and Iran.

🚨 The chief judge for @cacd_news has responded to @AP / media's complaint in US v. Mizuhara, saying there was a "miscommunication" in denying press access to the duty courtroom. The Court will work with @USMarshalsHQ "to ensure this unfortunate event is not repeated."
2023 was a whirl wind that ended with @SEA_GLOBE's closure.
From start to finish, I was backed by the best team of editors a young journalist could ask for: @ahaffner1, @dvmarchette, @bpdhannon and @amanda_oon. This @sopasia honor reflects their steadfast faith in me.
Wow.
Stunned to be a finalist for @sopasia's Award for Young Journalists. Proudly backed by @pulitzercenter's @Rainforest_RIN.
Also, meaningful to see one of @SEA_GLOBE's last collaborations with @earthjournalism in the running for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment.
Terry Anderson is one of the reasons I became an @AP reporter. His body of work in journalism and his courage during and after his captivity were guiding lights for young journalists. I am proud to be part of the AP generation that followed him. https://t.co/yHothBG0Mc
Carl Grant, a Vietnam veteran with dementia, died months after a police officer body slammed and paralyzed him.
Grant's death was one of more than 1,000 that an AP investigation documented after police used tactics that aren't supposed to be fatal. https://t.co/LUMZQQKKbO
The Commonwealth of #Massachusetts, my former home, lost a longtime public servant with the passing of William Delahunt, who spent 14 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. My story for @AP.

🧵One year ago today, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained in Russia for doing his job.
He remains in a Moscow prison.
We’re offering resources for those who want to show their support for him. #IStandWithEvan https://t.co/ll83UMXlp5
This investigation took months of effort, with support from a handful of editors and reporters.
But the true MVP was Mama Mendelson (@JrMendelson) for taking the time to buy the print edition of @TorontoStar and share some photos 📰
Your mom is the best, @amendelson_!
Working with @antonldelgado was always a delight. If you are an editor in need of a freelancer (or full-time staffer) I highly recommend you get in touch with him.
Journalism is never done in isolation. @SEA_GLOBE's former editors made this possible.
➡️ @bpdhannon and @amanda_oon edited my @pulitzercenter app.
➡️ @dvmarchette negotiated the contract.
➡️ @ahaffner1 edited every story.
Thank you all for letting me stand on your shoulders.
