Kansas already ran this exact experiment, and the record is not close. The state's proof of citizenship law blocked 31,089 eligible registrations, a tenth circuit appellate court's own precise number, 12 percent of everyone trying to register for the first time. In exchange for that, the state's own evidence in court identified 39 noncitizens who managed to register over nineteen years, an average of about two a year, which the appeals court itself called incredibly slight evidence. A federal judge eventually struck the law down entirely and ordered Kris Kobach back to legal education classes before renewing his own law license.

The SAVE America Act's polling numbers tell a similar story once you ask the actual question instead of the easy one. Voter ID alone polls at 74 percent. Ask about the documentary proof of citizenship requirement specifically, and support drops to somewhere between 51 and 65 percent depending on the poll. Ask whether people support the SAVE Act as a whole, the actual bill with its mail voting ban and its federal takeover of state election administration, and it falls to 37 percent, with 63 percent either opposed or unsure. That gap between how a slogan polls and how the actual legislation polls is not an accident. It is the entire strategy.

Worth sitting with the passport numbers too. A hundred forty million Americans do not have one. Twenty-one million voting age citizens have no citizenship document handy at all. Only five states even issue the enhanced REAL ID that shows citizenship status, and more than a third of Americans mistakenly believe their standard REAL ID already does. The gap between what people think they can produce and what they can actually produce is exactly where Kansas lost thirty-one thousand real, eligible, documented citizens the first time this idea got tried at scale.

In an emotional post marking the six-month anniversary of Alex’s death, she writes that no one has been held accountable and says her family has never received an apology or even a single phone call from government officials, hospital personnel, or the Minneapolis Police Department. At the same time, she expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support her family has received from people around the world, urging others to continue speaking out and never forget what Alex stood for.

“Today marks the six-month anniversary of Alex’s murder. No-one has been held accountable, no apologies, not a single phone call from any governmental official, hospital personnel, or the Mpls police dept. Six-months of pain, a roller-coaster of trauma over and over. Every time another a death, another mention, a picture, a tribute, a sorrow so deep. I wonder how to move forward. Will I ever get over this loss and this pain? Will I ever be able to enjoy life again? How does one live knowing that I have no power to change what has happened?

And yet the out-reach not only from Minnesota, but from around the world has been nothing less than spectacular. Every card, every gift, every heartfelt letter has been read, touched, held, and cherished by us all. The kindness you’ve all shown us is beyond words. Please never forget Alex and what he believed in ~ equality and peace for all. I will remember the things that made you, you. It will never take your memory. For the past 12 years I’ve worked as an independent consultant for students looking to go to college. My specialty is HBCUs. The single largest frustration year after year is the lack of attention to detail by both parents and students. For every student, I create a tracker of the schools they’re interested in attending, applications submitted, acceptances & rejections, scholarships offered, and a notes section. Seventy percent of those spreadsheets remain inactive and incomplete. Emails from the school largely go ignored. The parent either passes the buck to the student or the other way around. No this isn’t the case for everyone, but it’s one of the largest issues I’ve seen year after year for over a decade. What makes it worse is in addition to the email chains, most of the parents join all these “Parents of ABC University Class of ____” groups on Facebook.

So even if they don’t see the emails, they see the screenshots in the groups with hundreds of comments. Now Im not accusing everyone of this next statement, but the dirty little secret for quite a few of them is FERPA. They know the university would never make a public statement of that individual student, because they could violate the law. Many use this because they know if they go to the court of public opinion, the school won’t respond publicly.

No school is perfect, and I’m not defending bad actors, but what I am saying is publicly it will always be one sided, and a herd mentality will always point to the big bad school as the villain.
