Credentials are a marvelous thing aren't they? A PhD from Wits, political economy, the whole polished package. One might reasonably expect the thinking that accompanies them to rise above the level of a particularly earnest undergraduate essay. Yet somehow here we are.

You object that @FaithMangope keeps asking mayoral candidates what they will do about immigration because, as you so carefully remind us, they lack the legislative mandate, the capacity, and the budget. You thought that was tidy, neh? How convenient AND completely beside the point.

A mayor does not draft the Immigration Act. That much is true. A mayor does, however, govern the city in which the consequences of that ACT (or the failure of that ACT) land every single day. Informal settlements that expand overnight. Clinics that cannot cope. Police stations that run out of cells. Informal traders competing for the same square of pavement. Ratepayers who watch service delivery collapse under numbers no one planned for. These are not abstract national policy questions. They are the daily operational reality of the very municipalities these candidates seek to run.

To declare the subject out of bounds because the primary power resides elsewhere is rather like a ship’s captain refusing to discuss a hole in the hull on the grounds that he did not design the ocean.

The water is still coming in, Doctor. The passengers are still getting wet. And unfortunately for the cult you represent, the public has every right to ask the man seeking the wheel what, precisely, he intends to do about it: whether that means lobbying the national government, enforcing local bylaws, coordinating with Home Affairs, or simply acknowledging the scale of the problem instead of pretending it belongs to someone else.

You call this abuse of a public platform. Curious accusation. A current-affairs host on a public broadcaster is asking candidates for high office about an issue that ranks among the most urgent concerns of the electorate they hope to serve. Even a child could tell you that's not abuse. That is the job description.

If the questions make certain candidates uncomfortable, the discomfort may tell us more about the candidates than about the host.

You are credentialed. Your argument however, is not. It is a neat jurisdictional shell game that mistakes formal competence for practical responsibility. Voters do not live in the tidy compartments of the Constitution. They live in the cities. And any politician who cannot or will not speak to the conditions of those cities has already told us everything we need to know about the quality of his thinking.

The platform is not being abused, Doctor.
