I just realized that in one of my developmental writing classes, 25% of the students (that I know of!) have gone through the death of a parent.

Yes, this generation of students is struggling, but dear God they are tough.

@ProfChrisMJones And I think it is absolute to be laid at the door of the system, not the students. The whole point of school is standardized tests--and if they do badly on the tests, the consequences happen to the teachers, not to them.
