Spring seems to have arrived in Banff National Park, with the emergence of Bear 122, affectionately known as ‘The Boss,’ from its den.
Parks Canada has verified The Boss’s presence in the park, marking the first reported sighting of a grizzly bear this year. Bear No. 122 has earned the nickname “The Boss” due to his size, dominance, and longevity in the park. He’s one of the biggest and most successful grizzly bears in the Bow Valley region.
Believe it or not, Bear No. 122 has been struck by a train not once, but twice. Fortunately, he survived both encounters, simply brushing it off and going on about his day.
“The Boss” has earned his reputation through battles with other male bears. Scars and missing fur patches are likely souvenirs from past territorial disputes. He’s also been known to occasionally snack on smaller black bears, further solidifying his dominant status.
He is often one of the first grizzlies to emerge from hibernation in spring and the last to return in fall. Parks Canada reminds visitors to be alert and show wildlife respect when adventuring.
