LSU fans shook the Earth AGAIN!
At 10:03 pm Saturday night in Death Valley, @LSUfootball scored a touchdown in overtime.
At 10:06, the Tigers scored the game-winning 2-point conversion.
BOTH moments registered on our @LSUscience seismograph!
A few reminders to my fellow privileged white men who want to try to be non-assholes:
🧵
* You need to understand the concepts of privilege, power imbalance, implicit bias, positionality, intersectionity.
* It is not the job of any equity-deserving people to educate you.

Breaking news: We believe that this tiny crab was indeed trying to hide from Monday.
During ROV dives in the Monterey Bay, MBARI researchers often observe small crabs riding on the backs or clinging to the bellies of Scotoplanes sea cucumbers, also known as sea pigs.⠀
@DonaldHodge “This bill is about defending the most awesome responsibility a person can have: being a parent,” Florida state Rep. Joe Harding (R), who first introduced the bill, said Thursday. “That job can only be given to you by above.”
Sounds like a war on adoption as well as LGBTQ+ folks
Can’t tell you how happy my grocery store trip today made me. Everything I missed from the south was there in plenty, plus there was a lot of the international products California spoiled me on. 🎉🎉🎉
I can finally say with certainty: “I am going to be a professor” 😁
Thrilled to share that I’m starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and Marine Biology at UNC Wilmington in January 2022!
Keep an eye out for collaborations and good students to join me!
A day late, but loving the new #TopChefPortland season! Glad the cheftestants are bringing so much of themselves to the kitchen. And SO MANY of my favorite chefs from the series as the All Star Judging Panel!!! @BravoTopChef
Lots of external and internal conversations today converging on something:
By silently putting up with ___, you allow them to believe that ___ is acceptable. This has long, lasting impacts on systems and inter-personal dynamics. (1/4)
I’m bad at dual Twitter accounts and admittedly made my “professional science Twitter” more personal this year because #2020. So feel free to follow @Tolarchaeota for (mostly) science tweets!
Finally was able to transfer my cultures before the winter closure yesterday - always smile when I see this bright pink because it means they grew happily and oxidized ammonia to nitrite. #AOA#Nitrosarchaeum
A few months ago I stuck a little 🏳️🌈 in my bio to signify my “unseen” identity. Being “out” in my career has been slow, though close friends have known for 18 years. On #NationalComingOutDay , I’m proud to be a gay man, and strive to make STEM more inclusive and safe. #outinSTEM
I may not have children, but I feel emotional exhaustion for all the work I’ve done to help my family have peace in the midst of a pandemic, compounded with grief and loss. Motivation is hard, and productivity is too low, but self-care is important too. I’m trying. #postdoclife
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert. I’m not perfect. But I want to help if I can. Mostly I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re pursuing this alone, or to feel stuck with an unsupportive PI - you have folks in your community who want you to succeed. #AcademicChatter
I’m more often silent than not on social media. I’m much better at listening and learning. However, let me be clear - #blacklivesmatter. Were I a professor, I would have more power to make change at my institution. But that doesn’t mean I won’t help in any way that I can (1/3)
I am also available to proofread papers, emails, etc. - it’s unfair that much of this path requires prior knowledge, so I want to give back what I’ve learned along the way (since I can’t recruit students myself, I can at least offer to mentor) (3/3)
Local restaurants are suffering - donate to your favorite (or order carry out) to keep them going amidst COVID. Shouting out my favorite spot in Hawaii @KokoHeadCafe, suffering from tourist-enhanced quarantine, which is run by my favorite #TopChef, the hard working @leeannewong
https://t.co/gDJSSLAWkV If can, please give some love to our employees. Anything helps! Our Koko Head ohana appreciates your support during this time. We want to give back to you when you donate so we’re offering prizes for those who do, there are more details on our GoFundMe.
