Well folks, it's my last day on staff @NatGeo. It's been an amazing and humbling experience leading one of the finest teams in science journalism.
I'm taking October off, but if anyone needs a science editor, I'll likely be in the freelance market before year's end. Hit me up!
Excited for day two of #ACESAccelerate. Learned so much yesterday. I'll be presenting this afternoon -- a pre-recorded talk -- and hoping for an active chat to distract me from hearing my own voice!
@chasingellipses @talysatalysa I hope I was funny on the day I recorded it! I was almost going to go with "Hedge School" for the title, but that's kind of an obscure, Irish-specific reference. It also positioned me as an instructor. I just want to share my goofy, pet project notes with you all!
The National Library of New Zealand pulled out the world's largest atlas "Earth Platinum" for #geocart2022 delegates. Wonderful rare opportunity to get up close with this spectacular piece of work and its chief cartographer Roger Smith on hand to discuss its creation.
Our massive reporting package on haunting, under-appreciated climate threats to the world's forests drove all 26 foreign additions of @NatGeo in May—a true rarity. Most also ran @keithladzinski's breathtaking cover of a giant sequoia. See the whole issue: https://t.co/wiy8WYyXAQ
Here's a recap of the #ACESChat on Research Editing from yesterday. Thanks to @ACESEditors for pulling this together and for inviting me to share about the work I do! https://t.co/dETahDWewf
Thank you to @bradscriber and everyone who joined us today.
Don't miss our next #ACESChat with @sesquiotic on June 15 at 4 p.m. EDT.

@ACESEditors (1/3) A6 If you want an overview of what fact-checking is plus how and why to do it, check out The Chicago Guide to Fact-Checking by @brookeborel https://t.co/42wJPN2iFf #ACESChat
@ACESEditors@brookeborel@Poynter (3/3) A6 Lastly, some geographical resources. In addition to my @NatGeo Atlas (of course) I visit the Board on Geographic Names for every story. Some foreign place names can be outdated, but there’s no better central database for place names. https://t.co/pGJuFvznaQ #ACESChat

@ACESEditors (4/5) A5 It’s a grueling process for a writer to have someone scrutinize their evidence for every word in a draft, but it’s also gut-wrenching to be asked to “sign off” on a multi-thousand-word article as say that it’s been entirely confirmed. #ACESChat
@rhiannonroot A great example and a reminder that when something doesn't match up, it doesn't mean that the writer is wrong! Sometimes they have a better / more detailed / more current understanding that the reference material! #ACESChat
