Is purely data-driven AI enough to solve complex engineering challenges?
While deep learning has achieved remarkable things, applying it to advanced engineering exposes fundamental limits. High-quality engineering data is expensive and slow to produce, so the available datasets are small or of limited applicability. At the same time, the rules that govern engineering are already known and have been for a long time. They are the laws of physics, the properties of materials, and the fundamental limits of manufacturing processes. A purely data-driven system has to rediscover those rules from examples, which is both inefficient and unreliable.
That’s why we’ve built our AURA architecture around a hybrid approach to AI-powered discovery. Instead of relying purely on pattern recognition, AURA combines a symbolic reasoning engine with first-principles knowledge.
What does this mean for engineers?
🔹 De Novo Design: AURA can generate and explore entirely new, manufacturable designs without relying on prior examples.
🔹 Autonomous Execution: It translates high-level engineering intent into CAD geometry, formulating the underlying search and constraints satisfaction problem autonomously.
🔹 Reliability: Our hybrid reasoning system fuses well-established methodologies with a software architecture that works specifically in data-scarce environments.
We believe the future of AI in science is a collaborative partnership. AI shouldn't replace human ingenuity—it should empower engineers to focus on higher-level tasks, like defining objectives and exploring innovative concepts.
