Scientists develop a new PET tracer that can latch onto oxytocin receptors in living animals – paving the way for future studies in humans that may help researchers see how the ‘love hormone’ works in the brain and body, improving insights into social behaviour and mental health.
Via Australian National Total Body PET Facility, a partnership between Sydney Imaging – a #USYD Core Research Facility – the National Imaging Facility, and the Northern Sydney Local Health District.

A growing body of research suggests that the line between physical and mental health may be thinner than we think. When the body struggles to respond to insulin, the brain can suffer too.
Scientists are now exploring how insulin resistance - long linked to diabetes - might also affect mood, memory and even the risk of depression or dementia. It’s an emerging field that could change how we think about both metabolic disease and mental illness.
Simple measures that improve insulin sensitivity, such as exercise and healthy sleep, may also help the brain recover. The message is clear: looking after your metabolism is one of the most powerful ways to look after your mind.
