21 trains have derailed in India since the start of 2024, almost one accident every week! What is wrong with the Indian Railways?

The most recent accidents took place yesterday when two trains derailed. One in Uttar Pradesh and the other in Madhya Pradesh. Before that two trains derailed in Jharkhand.

These accidents have not just caused material damage but also loss of lives. Around 50 people have lost their lives while hundreds have been injured since the start of the year due to train accidents.

Seeing all these headlines almost every week made our team curious and we tried to figure out what was causing this.

Some reports say that this is due to a lack of investment in infrastructure. But in every budget, you hear that the government is pouring in money to modernize the railways! Something wasn’t adding up.

So we went through Indian Railways financials and came across a trend. It seems like the share of spending on existing railway infrastructure has declined. Instead, funds are being used to lay out newer railway lines and introduce new trains.

Now, building new infrastructure is extremely important, but should it be done at the cost of maintaining the existing infrastructure?

These are some important questions we all need to think of because Indian Railways is one of the most critical infrastructures in the country without which the supply chain of almost every industry would collapse.
