Ik las met bijzondere aandacht de bijdrage van Lotfi El Hamidi in de rubriek over sociale dilemma’s. Zijn reactie op de vraagsteller, waarin hij suggereert dat sommige principes zwaarder wegen dan vriendschap, en dat mensen soms „op de harde manier” moeten leren dat het „aan hen ligt”, vond ik niet alleen pijnlijk, maar ook buitengewoon simplistisch. Het lijkt voorbij te gaan aan de complexiteit van zowel menselijke relaties als de geopolitieke context waarin dergelijke meningsverschillen zich afspelen.

Als iemand die tot zijn 30ste in Iran heeft gewoond, politiek actief is sinds zijn 16e, en de politieke en religieuze dynamiek van het Midden-Oosten van binnenuit kent, ervaar ik dagelijks hoe moeilijk het is om balans te vinden tussen principes en relaties. Mijn uitgesproken verzet tegen politieke islam, zoals toegepast door de Islamitische Republiek #Iran, #Hamas en #Hezbollah, heeft me vaak tegenover mijn moslimvrienden en progressieve kennissen geplaatst. Toch zou het mij nooit in de verste verte te binnen schieten om hen „op de harde manier” te laten leren dat het aan hen ligt. Wat schiet iemand daar werkelijk mee op?

Relaties — vooral vriendschappen — zijn juist de plekken waar we elkaar moeten uitdagen én begrijpen. El Hamidi’s opmerking over „pizza-toppings versus racisme” slaat de plank mis door politieke verschillen te reduceren tot een binair goed-foutkader. Maar geopolitieke vraagstukken zoals die in het Midden-Oosten gaan niet over simpele morele keuzes; ze gaan over decennia van geschiedenis, machtsstructuren en diepgewortelde identiteiten. Het is precies deze reductie die zorgt voor polarisatie, zowel in persoonlijke relaties als in het publieke debat.

De vraag die ik aan Lotfi zou willen stellen, is: wat winnen we werkelijk door vriendschappen op te geven voor abstracte principes? En hoe kunnen we ooit een brug slaan tussen verschillende perspectieven als we bereid zijn menselijke verbindingen te verbreken om „een punt te maken”? Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat de enige manier om te leren van elkaar en onze overtuigingen te verdiepen, ligt in #dialoog, niet in het opofferen van vriendschap.
