What Jürgen Klopp built at Liverpool was never merely a collection of medals, it was an era, a rebellion and another immortal chapter in the history of England’s greatest football institution.
This is absolutely my bottom line feeling on the City debacle. Whatever plays out, Klopp and LFC are in every meaningful sense the British team of the last decade and in the discussion for the greatest in the history of the domestic game. Not been measurable (yet) in quantum of trophies, but it’s surely now beyond reasonable moral dispute.
Klopp’s Liverpool are arguably English football’s greatest ever side. If measured out in points totals, definitely. The 2019 team has the greatest *real* points total in history, and added a CL the same season. Then there’s the 2022 team that without City’s fraud has the second highest points total, and a domestic treble.
Football, in sanctioning city, can try to reflect all of this or not, but the ultimate truth is more evident now than ever.
Manchester City being found guilty of serious financial breaches only makes the achievements of Liverpool Football Club during that era feel even more monumental.
England’s grandest institution stood almost alone against a machine that dominated English football, yet Jürgen Klopp, Anfield and those famous red shirts kept dragging themselves back into the fight, season after season.
Liverpool reached heights of ninety-seven and ninety-nine points, conquered Europe, conquered England and produced football worthy of one of the greatest sides this country has ever seen.
There is something almost poetic about looking back now at the seasons in which Manchester City were crowned champions ahead of Klopp’s Liverpool, because history has a habit of remembering more than simply whose name was engraved on the trophy.
What Jürgen Klopp built at Liverpool was never merely a collection of medals, it was an era, a rebellion and another immortal chapter in the history of England’s greatest football institution.
And with everything we know today, the legend of that Liverpool side only grows larger with time.
He should have three Premier League titles to his name. He went toe-to-toe operating fairly. A penny for his thoughts today. No punishment can turn back the clock. His legacy has been enhanced in the past couple of days but what a pity that he didn't get what he deserved. Legend.
