Elon Musk reveals one mandatory comment field would save the US $200 billion a year.

Each year, the US Treasury wired out $5 trillion.

Health care. Defense contracts. Social Security. Grants.

Each line item left without a single line of metadata.

Where it came from. Where it went. Which law authorized it.

"Payments were being sent out with no appropriation code, not checking back to any congressional appropriation, and with no explanation."

Then DOGE proposed the cheapest fix in government history.

Not a new law. Not a court order. A database constraint.

"It was simply requiring payments from the main Treasury computer — which is called PAM, Payment Accounts Master or something like that, there's $5 trillion payments a year — that go out have a payment appropriation code."

He named the system: PAM — Payment Accounts Master.

Musk, who had spent a year inside DOGE reading payment code, knew what was missing.

A single mandatory field — the appropriation code that ties each payment to its congressional source — would force every dollar to declare its purpose before leaving the Treasury, instantly making fraud detectable, audits possible, and waste visible.

$5 trillion a year. No comment field. No appropriation code. No audit trail.

After DOGE flipped the field from optional to required, the audit problem became a data problem.
