John the Baptist is one of my fav ppl in scripture. He knew who he wasn't (I am not the Messiah) & he knew who he was (I am a voice in the wilderness)
Every day I need to get clear in my soul who I am & who I am not.
Otherwise I find myself living a life God never called me to.
The deep struggles of the soul cannot truly be considered until the trauma victim has experienced a relationship that bears the fragrance of Christ in hard places. We need the Word made flesh first. If you want the survivor to understand that God is a refuge, then be one.
Jesus' harshest words in the gospels were consistently aimed at religious leaders who focused on everyone's exterior behavior but never looked on the interior of their own hearts & the systems of hurt they perpetuated.
Oh Holy Night has a verse that was intentionally left out in the 1800’s (and STILL today)
“Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is Love and His gospel is Peace.
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, and in his name all oppression shall cease.”
Sing it
Suffering people often need others to have faith and hope for them. Admonitions to hope or trust only often result in despair; if the sufferers were able, they would do so. It is often helpful to say, “I know you struggle to hope right now. I will hope for you.”
Adam and Eve hide behind a tree, naked, and covered in shame.
Jesus hangs on a tree, naked, and conquers shame.
The cross of Jesus is the great reversal.
“We need to realize the insignificance of creation and see it for the emptiness it is before we can embrace the uncreated God in love.” Julian of Norwich
