Viserys I gets remembered as "the nice one" but honestly he might be the worst king in Targaryen history, he inherited everything. Jaehaerys built decades of peace, absolute power, a stacked treasury, dragons nobody could touch. all Viserys had to do was not blow it

instead he spends 20 years watching his own house turn into a bomb and just... doesn't do anything.

naming Rhaenyra heir wasn't even the mistake. The mistake was naming her and then never backing it up. Viserys marries into the Hightowers, get two sons and just lets two rival claims sit there growing teeth for two decades. He never disarms the greens, never actually secures her position, nothing.
He thought staying quiet and keeping the peace at dinner was the same thing as actually ruling.

so the day he dies, the war he spent 20 years pretending wasn't coming just... started Immediately. Worst war in Westerosi history, and he set every piece up himself.
