The igbo culture that I know is one of the most matrifocal in Nigeria the "Umuada" (daughters of the clan) hold real authority in community decisions.

The same misogynistic men make sure that their daughters are very educated.

Igbo women that tops the charts in child abuse and has full control of the household without even their husband have a say is the same one we are saying is a victim?

What is most remarkable about Enyeama is that, in order to succeed, he had to grapple with – and overcome – socio-cultural biases. There is a tradition of the imposing, proactive (in terms of claiming crosses) goalkeeper that meant that Enyeama, standing at under 6 feet, was initially rejected out of hand and then questioned at every turn. He was famously subbed off for penalty shoot-outs during Enyimba’s Champions League campaigns, but improved significantly and, interestingly, became an expert taker himself in addition to stopping them. Doubts over his lack of size were addressed by taking up more aggressive positions in one-on-ones while maintaining total calm—“All I usually do is to stand my ground when an attacker is in front of me. They are the ones under pressure to score,” he said.

He compensated for his limited wingspan by becoming more explosive, building his legs “like springs”, and for his vulnerability on crosses by leaning into his reflexes. His distribution, already a feature from the early days of his career, improved even more.

All of these went toward a quite formidable resume, capped off by winning the 2013 AFCON and reaching the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, equalling Nigeria’s best-ever finish at the Mundial. He even boasts a Hall of Fame performance on the global stage in the form of his epic joust with Lionel Messi in 2010.

Men are kind even when wealthy and treat women as humans with respect, it’s the opposite for women. A rich man controlling his wife is a red flag but women believe it’s okay to control their man if they are richer than him, and that’s because they don’t date for love but for money. It’s not just broke women problem, even rich women have this poor mindset too.

Asides from the brilliant point raised about our Igbo-speaking brothers in Delta who do not like to identify as Igbo for the reasons stated by Dr. Chife, it is such a beautiful thing to see that elders like him possess such an in-depth knowledge of their hometowns. He is clearly a repository of knowledge on Igbo culture, particularly Anam culture. This, I suppose, is how our elders are supposed to be: the links that join the present to the past, carrying with them the memories, stories, customs and histories that might otherwise disappear with their generation.

And I suppose all young people must also strive to learn deeply about their culture. I am talking to myself here. We must learn what makes us tick, what makes us who we are. We must make an effort, in ways both great and small, to become Dr. Chifes’ in our own right. Because someday, the generations that come after us will look to us for answers about their culture and history. When they do, we should be able to answer them.

I’m from Anam. Geographically located in Kogi State. Anam and Nzam which still speaks Igala, are brothers. Further West still are our cousins the Ibaji/Igala. Speaks Igbo. Bears Igbo names. Known as Olumbanasa. (True trivia: Odobo, Enekpa, Igah, Iyano, towns in present day Ibaji LGA of Kogi, are quarters in Nzam).

All in Anambra West LGA, Anambra State. In Igbo land. All physically separated from Igboland by big rivers, Niger and Omambala (the bridge connecting us to Igboland was only built in the 80s. Even today we call them, “Ndi Igbo” to distinguish from “ndi mbammili”, water people).

The entire lower Niger was once under Igala rule until the Aboh rose to prominence- as corroborated by Landers Brothers (1830s) and Baikie (1854) expeditions?
And there is nothing unusual about the Igala connection. The Abriba (small London, ndi Okpogho, Kalu ukwu na Kalu nta), the wealthiest Igbo group who control the seas and trade routes extending to Northern Europe, is Igbo mixed with Ejagham.

Igala? Like Anam, like Nsukka, Osomala, Asaba, and Okpanam (Anam’s big brother), etc, etc. The Igbo are an ancient civilization. Neighbors influence it, it influences neighbors.

We live at the edge of Igboland. Like Ikwerre, Ika, Etche etc.

And the point? Anam remained Igbo during the Biafra war. In fact, Ndi Anam were amongst the most ferocious fighters during the Biafra war (been that way since time, ask Illah and Aboh, our brothers who inhabit the other side of the River Niger, whom we terrorized in the remote past, or the Fulani who attempted entry into Anam in the recent past).

And that is precisely the point. No denial of our Igboness. No betrayal of our Igbo brothers. No abandoned property. No name change to escape Nigeria’s punishment of the Igbo after the war (like some of Ika’s prominent people, etc - “If I speak, I am in big trouble.")

If Nnamdi from Ikwerre, Uche from Ika, Amechi from Etche etc say they’re not Igbo let them be. The Guilt from betraying your brothers is a terrible thing to deal with. And people will go to great lengths to cover it up - like saying they’re from Benin. It is difficult to accept Responsibility for breach of trust. To forgive yourself and grow.

Unity is never forced upon any peoples (observe Nigeria’s condition forcing people to unite). Be patient. The Northern Irish were turned against their brothers in the South by the British. I believe the Emerald Isles will eventually be reunited.

For now remember, NdiIgbo are NOT recruiting.

Stay focused. Form a coalition of the willing. And keep pushing for regional autonomy. Our road is to Catalonia in Spain
