5 mistakes most Jiu-Jitsu athletes make with learning wrestling:
I've been a wrestler, I've been a butt-scooter, and I've been a butt-scooter re-learning to wrestle.
Most Jiu-Jitsu schools teach stand-up poorly, and their students develop bad habits as a result.
But you can be different if you avoid these 5 common mistakes.
Massive improvements are really this simple:
-----------
1. Having a poor stance/positioning.
When I did wrestling in school, we used to get in our stance and stalk invisible opponents around the mat for what felt like hours.
But "good position" isn't just about getting low in a "wrestling stance".
Focus on matching head heights, keeping your elbows tight, and keeping your head up.
Watch your opponent's hips - they don't lie.
-----------
2. Taking bad shots to be "aggressive".
This is a bad habit I developed from ADCC rules.
I would shoot the most horrendous single you've ever seen, count to 3, and pull guard.
Not a bad strategy against good wrestlers in a wrestling-focused ruleset when the goal is just to sit to your butt, but not a good general wrestling habit.
-----------
3. Not training from the feet "because it's hard".
Since CJI, I've been forcing myself to do some stand-up work basically every single session.
This sometimes is as much as full live wrestling rounds and sometimes as little as hand-fighting drills to help me warm up.
Stand-up is always going to be hard, but the longer you avoid it, the harder it gets.
-----------
4. Focusing on flashy moves.
Most of the takedowns that happen in Jiu-Jitsu matches are not the flashy ones that you see on viral Instagram reels.
Focus on:
• Single leg takedowns
• Double leg takedowns
• Ways to get to the head or hips
And you'll be farther ahead than most.
-----------
5. Not working enough on grip-fighting.
Good grip-fighting gives you the ability to:
• Neutralize the offense from your opponent.
• Set up an offense of your own.
It's also safe and easy to train.
This skill will help you hold your own with people who are more explosive and dynamic on their feet than you.
-----------
Admittedly, I've never been the best wrestler in my division.
But I've been focusing a lot on it again over the last few months. I've traveled and trained with many of the best wrestlers and coaches of wrestlers in the submission grappling world.
These are just a few things that I've learned from them.
