BREAKING: A long-time John Cornyn staffer just defected to James Talarico's campaign — after calling Ken Paxton "THE MOST CORRUPT" politician in Texas.
In an almost unheard-of political move, a longtime Republican Senate staffer just crossed party lines to join Democrat James Talarico's campaign, delivering a scathing rebuke of GOP nominee Ken Paxton along the way.
Jacob Smith spent five years working for Republican Senator John Cornyn as deputy legislative director and policy adviser. He's now signed on as Talarico's deputy policy director.
"I've worked for Republicans like Senator Cornyn my entire career, but this year I'm proud to be joining James Talarico's campaign," Smith said in a statement. "Instead of playing partisan politics, Talarico speaks to the needs of everyday people who day in and day out work too hard for too little."
Smith didn't hold back on Paxton either: "Ken Paxton is the most corrupt, self-dealing politician in Texas who would sell their futures to the highest contributor just to hold onto power. I'm encouraging all my fellow Republicans who know Ken Paxton is unfit to serve in the Senate to finally hold him accountable at the ballot box."
A Republican operative working on Senate races called this level of cross-party hiring "unheard of." And it's easy to see why Republicans are nervous. This comes after Cornyn himself lost to Paxton in a bitter GOP primary runoff, a defeat that set off real alarm bells within the party, given Paxton's well-documented baggage: an indictment for securities fraud, an impeachment trial, and a publicly reported extramarital affair. Paxton avoided a criminal trial only by agreeing to community service.
The race is now polling as a dead heat, with Talarico picking up meaningful support from independents and even some disillusioned Republicans. As one anonymous Texas GOP operative admitted: "They can't stomach voting for Paxton. That's his biggest weakness in the state."
And Talarico's campaign has the resources to capitalize on that opening. He's already raised more than $70 million — more than any other non-incumbent Senate candidate this cycle, and millions more than Paxton — with grassroots enthusiasm so strong he's had to return donations exceeding legal contribution limits.
When a career Republican staffer walks away from the party to work against your candidacy, and calls you the state's most corrupt politician on the way out, that's not spin. That's a five-alarm warning from inside your own tent.

MAKE IT STOP! I get at least two dozen texts a day from every Democratic candidate everywhere in the country pleading for more money or insulting me for not contributing. I now know why the DNC is hurting for money; Ken Martin has zero control.
Dear Senator Bill Cassidy,
You have a chance to redeem your grave mistake of giving America RFK Jr.
Trump ran you out of the Senate. You owe him nothing.
You owe Americans everything.
Vote NO on Todd Blanche.
Honor your oath.
Channel your inner McCain.
That's legacy. 🇺🇸
Last night's political earthquake in Michigan should make one thing very clear: it's time for Democrats to grow a spine and stop bending the knee to corporate donors.
#BREAKING: @jdvance: “If you go back to WWII, if you go back to WWI, if you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all ended with some kind of negotiation.”
Lawrence: “NO, they didn’t. WWII ended with ZERO negotiations. WWII ended the way Donald Trump claimed his war in #Iran was going to end—unconditional surrender. Japan and Germany each signed unconditional surrender documents. Adolf Hitler killed himself rather than submit Germany to the unconditional surrender that he knew was coming. Every vice president, everyone, prior to JD Vance has KNOWN that President FDR demanded the unconditional surrender of Germany and Japan during WWII and when FDR died…his vice president, then elevated to the presidency, Harry Truman, accepted those unconditional surrenders without a word of negotiation with anyone about those surrenders. That kind of statement by JD Vance demonstrating a complete IGNORANCE of how WWII ended is the kind of thing that used to get you drummed out of American politics before Donald Trump’s DUMBING DOWN of the Republican Party and it tells you something about the quality of thinking that the vice president of the United States brings to his job.” 😳
Reporter: What's stopping Iran rebuilding and restarting from where we were pre the war their nuclear program?
Vance: Well, number one, they would have to get a lot of money in order to rebuild their nuclear program. You're talking about billions and billions…
Ossoff on Trump calling him "Os(jerk!)off" -- "I didn't think it was his best work as far as nicknames go. But more to the point, he is increasingly unstable. And I think it flows the fact that he is globally humiliated from this failed war."
