If you're a singer/songwriter and are trying music production, here's the best tip I've learned:
Stop listening to the words.
Compression, EQ, reverb, instrumental balance, all require you focus on the *sound*. Lyrics will distract your attention.
Stop. Listening. To. The. Words.
