Clopidogrel and Omeprazole interact because omeprazole reduces the activation of clopidogrel. Clopidogrel is prodrug that needs to be activated by CYP2C19, but omeprazole blocks this enzyme. This decreases clopidogrel’s effectiveness in preventing blood clots, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
If stomach protection is needed, pantoprazole is a safer alternative. 📚
