Still haven't entirely replicated my networks over on Mastodon (can you awesome folks move over there already?) but I'm from now on going to try to not be active on Twitter. Join me there at @[email protected].
@JKSteinberger I think Mastodon is a better place to set up than bsky, the latter is guaranteed to get monetised to our detriment in some way, eventually. Almost 10x more people on Mastodon, too. I hope to see you there (active, that is, I know you have an account).
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature Woolly (iOS only). But there’s no one perfect app, it really depends on your use cases and aesthetic. Tooot, Mona and Ice Cubes are my other favs.
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature The apps are also a lot prettier than the native version. Lots of options for both mobile and desktop here: https://t.co/K1JvObfceH
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature Number 1 tip: use and follow hashtags heavily. With no algo, it’s the main way to discover content outside your follows, and for people to discover your content.
2: use an app, and not the official one. It solves the issues with viewing content and profiles on other servers.
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature I see you’re on https://t.co/hBYkQg4Epi, seems to be a good one. It’s based in the EU, which is better for data protection. Also paid, I see, which is good for longevity of admins and mods.
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature Not much in the long run. As long as the server is going to stick around and the admin is good, then it’s fine. You could pick a server with people from the community you want to interact with, but you can mutually follow each other no matter what server you’re on so no biggie.
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature I’ve had far more engagement and discussions over there than I ever did here, despite the far lower user count. Far friendlier community, too. If you need tips on how to move, hit me up!
@Felixvanhoften @PoliticOfNature Breaking my Twitter silence to say: I’d be very happy if you two were on Mastodon. It’s a good place for discussions with the science/academia heavy crowd there. Not so much for broadcasting to the world, because of the smaller user base, but that’s not why I’m there.
I don't want to be on Twitter any more but y'all are talking about #beyondgrowth2023 on here. If you believe in post-growth then stop supporting capitalist social media and get thee over to Mastodon!
#BeyondGrowth
@Felixvanhoften Great! If you pop that handle in your Twitter bio then people can find you over on Mastodon with automated tools like https://t.co/ua9htTV3nX.

@Trevizer @joinmastodon In short no, you can’t be any more sure what they’re doing with your personal data than any other admins of whatever website, you’re reliant on the law to stop abuse. But at least Mastodon admins have fewer motives for abuse and plenty motive to not abuse.
@Trevizer @joinmastodon Pics and usernames are public so that’s moot. Email, password, IP address and any associated metadata (if they even collect it, I’ve no idea) are covered by data privacy laws like GDPR, same as anyone handling personal data.
Twitter is not a public town square no matter how many "commitments" to this or that the owner gives. Only a decentralized, open-source system can guarantee that.
