I will probably be off air for a while, till I get to Charlotte and with some luck I can use a free hot spot somewhere there, otherwise our case worker may be able to help us with a USA simcard. Either way thanks to everybody's positive responses. It means alot to me and my family.
I asked my cell provider to enable international roaming on my simcard but they say it can take up to 7 days to activate. To be honest it wouldnt matter anyway if they enable international roaming in a reasonable time frame, my airtime has been used up for this month. I will have to wait for it to recharge.
I am now leaving my home. I have never traveled outside of South Africa. Everyting will be a first for me going forward from this moment, and for a lot of moments from this one. Time to take a giant leap towards a new future.
@BlkRobedRegmnt1 My family's tickets were approved. We are enroute to the USA on Monday. I cant even explain the level of gratitude I feel. I am purple all over from pinching myself the whole day. I have read some of the tweets to my wife, we are both just met with disbelieve from kind people.
@Brooke639318322 I actually think our cultures have far more in common than most people realize. I'm sure there'll be a learning curve, but it already feels like home.
Greeted last of my family members today. And our hearts are just raw with emotion. Glance back at what we leave behind, but have vision of what is to come and know it is the path that is set out befor us. But still my heart is just, just so raw today.
@Dan198233 I didn't expect people to roll out the red carpet for me, and would have been content with little and not much, but I see now, people are rolling out the golden carpet, and its overwhelming. My faith in humanity is getting restored. Thank you.
@Rational119 I have one child, a 13-year-old son, he is incredibly excited about the USA. It means a lot to me that many of the hardships my wife and I face are things he may never have to experience. Like every parent, we want our child to have more opportunities than we had
@Rational119 Thank you for your kind words. Americans keep on surprising me, and in a good way. I think I am in for a culture shock. Got so use to be treated as a second class citizen that being treated decently now feels like wining the power ball.
@LiznMagMom For some it's hard to ask for help. I would much rather help other people. And I understand where the sentiment comes from, and I appreciate it. Maybe we have been marginalized in South Africa as a minority for so long that some of us have been programmed to help ourselves.
@firstHat Do not go gentle into that night, rage rage against the dying of the light. Yes we lose when we give up, while there is still a sliver of hope that faintly burns in us, there is still a chance. And without hope... what are we?
@LiznMagMom For certain it is a challenge. How do you decide between something practical and something sentimental. As it turns out there is a very hard line between need and want. And I pray many people won't have to find out and make those most difficult choices.
@hooddevin43 Only the most beautiful place I have ever seen, Charlotte NC. I am going to visit one of the museums in the area to get a better understanding of its origins. Think I saw its name mentioned somewhere , like the first town involved with gold mining.
@MPeale It is a mix of emotions. I am so happy about the future, and in the same breath... I am devastated. I knew this day would come, but its much more vivid emotionally than I could have imagined. To see certain emotions manifest on peoples faces right infront of you, breaks you 😭
@eritheoni Here in South Africa manual gear cars, I would say is in the majority. I have never had a Honda with a CVT gearbox and I hear they are awful. This little Honda uses a manual gearbox and it was a delight to drive.
If reliability was a car, it would be this little dynamo. It has never failed us. I hope this little Honda will serve its next owner as well as it did us. I will genuinely miss this car. I just need to find it's counter part in the USA.
@Brooke639318322 Thank you for your kind reply. Yes we are leaving on Monday. It is difficult for us to ask for help. We don't want to be a burden on anyone, if anything I would rather want to help someone else. But if we need help I will reach out. Thanks so much!!
