At a recent coaching conference, Russell Martin, stood up and said something that every coach who has ever been under pressure to win needs to hear "You can't coach just to win."
Before you dismiss that, read what he actually meant by it ๐

About a year ago, I started writing a book that I thought would be fun to share with a few friends, family members, and local coaches.
I wanted to write about my experiences and maybe save young coaches from the mistakes I made over 20+ years of building a high school basketball program. Once I started writing, the years of coaching, learning, failing, winning, and countless conversations with other coaches started to pour out and it became something much bigger.
This book became a blueprint for building a program built on accountability, culture, discipline, relationships, and leadership. It went far beyond just offense and defense, it became more than just a book for coaches. It became a book for anyone wishing to understand elite programs and how alignment within an athletic program should work.
Yes, it has X's and Oโs. Offense. Defense. Special teams. Scouting reports. Practice ideas and more.
But more importantly it talks about:
-Building culture the right way
-Handling parents
-Working with administration
-Managing social media
-Leading young people in todayโs world
After a year of hard work, Iโm excited to announce the book is in the final editing process and will officially be published on May 26. More information will be coming soon.
For every coach trying to build something that lasts, this oneโs for you.
Yon donโt need more information. You know what to do.
Youโre just afraid youโre not good enough.
And so you delay. You avoid. You distract. Which only proves your fear right.
Fear hates action.
Live in truth.
Do the work.
As an AD, I remind our coaches that, if done correctly, they will make a bigger impact than any wins or losses ever could. Although winning is always the goal, building strong relationships, creating accountability, and holding players to championship standards are the things that will stay with athletes for a lifetime.
In todayโs society, wins and playing time have become the biggest measures of success. However, if we allow those things to define a personโs worth, we miss the true purpose of athletics. The value of relationship building, character development, discipline, and teaching athletes how to handle adversity will always outweigh a scoreboard.
Years from now, most athletes will not remember every score or statistic, but they will remember the coaches who challenged them, believed in them as human beings, held them accountable, and helped shape them into better people. That is the lasting impact of coaching.
